The early years of this dynasty were fairly peaceful and for the most part prosperous. The final two rulers would have political strife on their hands. The conflicts were initiated by the changes instituted by Peribsen. Khasekhemwy was responsible for settling many of the disputes that had as a result of those changes. He reconciles both factions by adding both Set and Horus to his name. Both Horus and Set surmount his serekh. Khasekhemwy's rule may have been the bond that allowed Egypt to flourish in the Old Kingdom.

The name of the first king of the 2nd Dynasty, Hotepsekhemwi, which means "the two powers are in peace", may suggest a reunification of Egypt after the dynastic troubles of the 1st Dynasty. It is also possible that this royal name merely confirms the Egyptian unity, without referring to a division of the country at the end of the previous dynasty. The Old Kingdom, was the richest and most creative period in Egyptian history. All the pyramids were built at this time; the growth in population and wealth allowed the kings to apportion vast amounts of labor and materials to these monuments to themselves. Djoser (or Zoser) became powerful enough to control the whole of the country. Egypt had, meanwhile, prospered and grown beyond everyone's wildest dreams. Agricultural production had been revolutionized by the building of massive irrigation projects; trade had ballooned to super-human proportions; the population had swelled exponentially.
